A person-centred practice
Telehealth Psychology Australia is a small practice founded by two registered psychologists, Lloyd Talbot and Mathew van Velsen. We work with people across Australia by secure video, and we keep our books small on purpose, so that the person you start with is the person you continue with. This page explains who we are, how we work, and the standards we are held to.
Built around continuity
Telehealth Psychology Australia Pty Ltd was founded by Mathew van Velsen and Lloyd Talbot, both Registered Psychologists with general registration through the Psychology Board of Australia and AHPRA.
We built the practice around two ideas. The first is that we value continuity: we structure the practice so that you see the same psychologist across your sessions, rather than starting again with someone new each time. The second is that telehealth, done properly, removes some of the practical barriers that can stand between people and consistent care. Distance, travel, and waiting rooms become irrelevant when sessions happen by secure video from wherever you are.
We see children and adults, Australia-wide. We do not run a physical clinic, and we are telehealth only by design.

Our approach
Our philosophy is simple to state and harder to do well: we offer unhurried, continuous, evidence-based care, delivered by the same psychologist over time. In practice, that means a few specific things.
- We work collaboratively. We talk through what is going on, agree on what you want from therapy, and revisit that together as we go.
- We draw on established, research-supported approaches: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, schema therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and supportive therapy. The approach is matched to you, not the other way around.
- We use validated measures, such as the K10, PHQ-9, GAD-7, and DASS-21, where they are useful, so that progress is something we can look at together rather than guess at.
- We prioritise continuity of clinician. You are not passed between providers; you work with the psychologist you begin with.
These approaches are supported by clinical guidelines and peer-reviewed research, including guidance from the Australian Psychological Society and other bodies. Individual experiences vary, and therapy is not one-size-fits-all.
What guides us
Continuity
The same psychologist, session after session. We keep our caseloads deliberately small to protect this.
Considered care
We take time over assessment and over the work itself. We do not rush sessions or push a fixed program.
Clarity
We are open about what we do, what it costs, and what to expect, before you book and as we go.
Evidence
We work from established therapeutic methods and validated measures, and we are honest about what they can and cannot do.
Respect for your privacy
Your information is handled under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, and your clinical records are held in Australia.
Access
The same care wherever you live. Secure video brings therapy to the city, the suburbs, and rural and remote communities alike.

A deliberate choice, not a fallback
- It removes geography. You can see the same psychologist whether you live in a capital city, a regional town, or somewhere remote, anywhere in Australia.
- It removes travel and waiting rooms. Sessions happen from your home, your office, or wherever you can speak privately.
- It supports continuity. Because location is not a constraint, it is easier to keep seeing the same psychologist over time, including if your circumstances change.
How sessions run
Sessions run for about 50 minutes (typically 46 to 50) over secure video through Halaxy Telehealth. It is browser-based, so there is nothing to install. The video service is provided by Amazon Chime, hosted on AWS in Sydney, with AES-256 encryption. Sessions are not recorded.
If you consent separately, an optional AI note-taking tool (Halaxy AI Scribe) can assist with session notes; it is Australian-hosted, keeps no audio, and is not used to train AI models.
